Suddenly no brakes

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

My 79 year old mother's SRX recently failed suddenly and her brake pedal went all the way to the floor. I went to check and sure enough, I drove the pedal to the floor with minimal resistance multiple times. Looking underneath, there was no indication of brake fluid leaking anywhere. Reservoir was full and no leakage around the master cylinder.  I suspected the master cylinder had failed so I purchased a replacement.  I assumed it was a good one since when I bench bled it, it firmed up to the point where I couldn't depress the piston at all.  Installed it, topped off the fluid and tested it.  Same as before.... pedal to the floor.  With the simple design of a brake booster, I have a hard time believing this is the culprit.  If there was a  leak, there would be fluid on the ground. If it were air in the line, it wouldn't have been a sudden failure.  I'm at a loss.  What am I missing?

Try bleeding the brakes again and see if there are any loose connections around the calipers. Also, have you changed the brake pads?

Brake pads and hard lines were replaced just over a year ago. Brakes have been working fine until now and no leaking fluid around calipers.

Probably still have air in the lines. Keep bleeding the brakes several times.

Check for loose hub / wheel bearings if one or both are loose will cause brake pedal to go to floor.

Though I do not understand how a loose wheel bearing could cause loss of hydraulic pressure in the brake system, I will check this weekend. She had not mentioned anything about a wobble or noise during turning that would normally accompany a loose or worn hub/bearing. I am, however, unable to yet solve the issue so I gratefully accept all suggestions.

You are not loosing pressure when brakes are applied pads are going in more trying to make up difference for the loose bearing. If bearing is loose the rotor moves

Hi k9sar! No solutions as I don’t know much about cars, but curious if you’ve found a problem/solution? I was driving my ‘12 SRX, over the weekend, in rainy weather, and while braking, I went over a small bump and suddenly lost resistance. I had to push my brakes all the way to the floor for it to just basically roll to a stop. Just had fluids topped off the week before, but checked anyway, brake fluid reservoir was full. While I had the car turned off, I pumped the brakes once, and was trying to pump it one more time when I finally felt resistance from the brakes! Still don’t know what caused it. Has been working normal since. I was thinking possibly the brakes had locked when I went over the bumps and just didn’t reset or whatever it does.... is that a possibility?

There is something with the '11-12 SRX that causes the brake to go to the floor and stick after hitting slight bumps. My local mechanic said that GM will do what they have to do if you get a verifiable repair place to confirm that it is happening. Because it doesn't happen all of the time, I dont know how we are suppose to prove it to the repair shop. But it is not a simple fix. They will have to remove you dash and replace some crazy expensive part. The cost is approximately $4500. That's why they are not trying to make it public. Please be careful driving, and watch the bumps until you can get it "verified ". AMD dont waste money getting routine brake jobs done amd redone.

Spray some WD40 or PB blaster on bleeder screws and let set for awhile before trying to open again.

I have a 2012 SRX with 84k miles, all maintenance up to date. I used it on a 5hr road trip and the brake pedal went straight to the floor. I assumed it was bc the vehicle wasn’t driven for a few weeks but after reading the comments, this is clearly a GM mechanical issue.

I have the same issue with my 2011 SRX. It occurs when the anti lock brakes or the track active systems are install. The pedal goes to the floor and you have to pump the brakes to get the car to stop. After a while it seems to reset itself. I bled the brakes and checked out the systems to no avail. I think it is an electrical issue. No codes ever come up. It happened again yesterday and I am checking the brake system relay next. This should be a recall issue. It will kill someone that is a less skilled driver when it happens.

Same issue whenever anti-lock is activated brakes go to the floor. By the time you get to the repair shop they have reset. Dim headlights also. Cadillac has a dangerous vehicle on the road and there are a lot of them.

Hi all. I have 2013 SRX and this is happening to me. Brakes go all the way to the floor and takes a long time to stop. It's at the shop right now. They can't duplicate what I've been experiencing. 2 weeks before the brake issue the car threw a "service awd/rear axel" warning that just went away. Wondering if that has anything to do with it? Has anyone been able to find a fix. Thanks! I hate having a car I'm afraid of.

BRAKES TOTALLY FAILED WHEN TAKING A CORNER TOO FAST----DROVE CAR DOWN A SIDE STREET AND SHUT IT OFF---AFTER 5 MINUTES RESTARTED CAR---SOME BRAKING WAS AVAILABLE----AFTER DRIVING VERY CAREFULLY FOR 30 MINUTES BRAKES WERE NORMAL. i DONT JACK RABBIT STARTS. I START BRAKING WELL IN ADVANCE. HAPPENED THREE YEARS AGO--NO PROBLEMS SINCE.
