It's not fixed yet but I am going back to basics. I have replaced all of the suspect sensors and the fuel pressure regulator. I also found many wires with no insulation. With all that fixed I haven't hit the solution. Even though I have gone over every vacuum line I am going to try spraying them with stater fluid. Someone told me the the vacuum booster for the brakes is a good line to check but I don't think the 1993 xjs has one.

I also had a civic that did exactly the same before and had 175k mi on it. So I changed spark plug wires, spark plugs and the distributor cap. The problem went away and the thing runs like its new.
