Ring gear and pinion replacement

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I have a 2000 SType Jag with 36000 miles.  Ran
great until one random night I went to put it in gear
and heard this grinding sound.  Something was
spinning in the rear and I think it’s the ring gear and
pinion.  What I need to know is they type of rear
suspension system is in this model.  Was it ford that
made it and or where to buy a repair manual and
buy parts.

Since your car is worth very little I would buy a used differential from a junk yard or on Craig's list.

I know that wasn't meant as a dig. But it kills me as I learn that this car is such a heap of low value garbage. What is the deal with this car? Is it just a bad year, bad model, poor engineering or design? What else can I expect to go wrong? It is differential thing a common problem with the model/year? I mean if I buy a used one (if I can even find one) should I be concerned that the same part has failed in it as well? Should I bother to sink any more money into the otherwise beautiful car I just bought?

Sorry but the S types and the X types just were not very good which is why their value is so low. I suggested the used diff because you can probably pick one up for $100 which would get your car back on the road. Rebuilding it with new gears and bearings might cost as much as the car is worth.

Thank you F_O_R You are spot on. It seems impossible to find a matching yr/model car in any junkyard around here. Someone asked if there was any chance they put the same differential in several different yrs /models or if there is an easy way to find out.
