Well it all depends on what the problem is. By the sounds of it the gas gauge is not working, right? A lot of times it is because of the sending unit in the gas tank. You should probably just bring it to a mechanic to have checked out.

And yes the sending unit is connected with the fuel pump in the gas tank. The sending unit is what reads the gas level in the gas tank.

From what I see they will run anywhere from $150 to $350. This is for the whole assembly which would include the fuel pump. You would want to do this because the gas tank needs to be dropped down to change this. So that is labor cost on top of it. It is a 2 hr. job.
