Have it read for codes, even if the check engine light is NOT on the computer will have stored information and codes. Discount auto stores will read codes for no fee. write them down.
Sounds as if your problem is electronic and not mechanical. If the vehicle will not die while stationary (in park) with the engine running at a high rpm, a shop with a live engine analyzer will be required. They can drive the vehicle with the computer hooked up, then read the data stored and determine which part is at fault. Throwing parts at the problem is expensive, and normally auto parts stores have a no return policy on electronic components.
