Replace Engine or Used Car

Asked by Elijah Jul 25, 2019 at 06:21 PM about the 2006 Toyota RAV4 Sport

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I currently have a 2006 Toyota Rav4 Sport with 278,000 miles with a busted
engine (it is predicted to last 500,000 miles). I have multiple options, but here
are the main two. I can either replace the engine for $5,000 or I can get a used
2006 Toyota Rav4 for $5,000 with 150,000 miles. My question is whether I
should replace the engine or buy the new car? Should I get a new engine for a
car with almost 300,000 miles (and could potentially last 200,000 more miles)
or should I buy a used car with 150,000 miles with a 13 year old engine? New
engine with more miles or old engine with less miles?

I would vote for none of the above. No one claims that all RAV's will go a half a million miles. A car with 150,000 might last a long time and it might not. I suggest a lower mile car.

I mean, if you're going to replace it with another vehicle, then just get one with low miles or a new one. Going from one high mileage vehicle to another high mileage vehicle doesn't make sense. The only way I would keep this is with a good low mileage replacement engine sourced locally. $5K for an engine would be a hard no for me.

I might buy the lower mile RAV4 for $3,000 but not $5,000.
