The check engine, VSC, and 4WD lights keep coming on at the same time.

Asked by Diane1234 Aug 22, 2015 at 05:45 PM about the 2007 Toyota RAV4 Base

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

The lights are on in my car.  Have had both oxygen sensors replaced.  The lights go off for a day, then they come back on.  One mechanic said maybe it needs a software update, other said maybe it was that the sensor was not an official Toyota part  (the front sensor was a Toyota part).  This car does have a recall on it for an oil consumption issue.  However, they have not figured out a remedy for it yet.  All other recalls have been addressed.  I screwed the gas cap on properly and lights are still on.  Any advice?

Have you had - or did the mechanic do an OBDII scan? And 02 sensors really should be Denso. But not absolutely critical.. other brands will work and not cause the CEL to come on

Also, there is nothing wrong with the VSC. Toyota/Lexus uses not only the braking system, but also controls the throttle to help get the RAV out of tricky situations with VSC. If the engine is not running right, the ECM shuts down those systems

My Toyota Rav4 suddenly had VSC, Check Engine, & 4 wheel drive lights come on and stay on. Also noticed a little rough idling when first starting my vehicle. Took it to my local dealership and they immediately diagnosed the problem as a loose vacuum hose! Checked it and, sure enough, a hose had worked loose. They reconnected hose, reset lights, and all is well for now! Hope that is all there is to it! Zero cost for repairs! Thank you Bristol Toyota!

Hi Evie, My RAV4 is doing this exact same thing. The code came up "Lean Fuel" which my mechanic said could be an O2 sensor or possibly 5-6 other things. He cleaned my spark plugs and reset the lights. Lights stayed off for 2 days then came back on.:-( Could it be something as simple as a loose vacuum hose? I will ask. Thanks for the info. Fingers crossed!

It was a loose gas tank cap.

On my 2011 RAV4 this is all due to a poor design of rubber tubing downstream (to the left) of the Mass Air Flow Sensor. This tubing is a "press fit" into the air manifold and twice it has worked its way out of the manifold. When it does, the 3 lights that come on are always VSC, Check Engine & 4WD. Before taking your vehicle to any dealer, please open your hood and look to the manifold to the left (downstream) of your air filter. Stupid design gives all of us RAV4 drivers many moments of apprehension that are unnecessary. To get the fitting end back in all of the way in the air manifold takes some hard pressing. There should be a mechanical fastener there so this does not occur, but the connection is at a funny angle and there is really no way to rig anything.

Thanks Charles and others who had commented on the rubber tubing coming loose. That exactly was the problem I had with my 2012 RAV4. Travel through some rough roads probably had made it come off the connection which doesnt have any clamps or anything else to hold it in its place. Bad design.

I am so glad I found this post! It's been driving me crazy. I'm going to have my BF look at the hose tomorrow. FINGERS CROSSED!! :)

Can this issue happen even if it is not all the way off? Mine was not seated all the way on. I pushed it all the way back in and reset the code. I'll have to see if it comes back on.

My lights only came on when the tubing was all of the way out. Actually, the first time it happened I could hear a difference in the noise of air flow in the engine compartment. Both times I had a friend who could reset the code for me using a hand-held analyzer that costs about $50 at Harbor Freight.

Charles my RAV 4 2006 model the one which says parts with Vancard has issue of higling inconsistence. Sometimes when in traffic it wants to jump in a stationary place. The car will move then blocks like it has a fuel bump issue and then opens to move very fast. I took it for diagnosis and they said it was an airflow sensor. I replaced but the problem did go off, after a day the check engine was back and problem back. Another mechanic said it was gear box sensor. I replaced the three sensor the problem did not cease. what could be the problem.

I was having these problems as well in November. They said it was the engine coil and replaced it. Now in the last two days it has been happening again and there is a shake in the vehicle. It feels mostly in the back end and when I come to a stop it feels like it is going to choke out.

Try to check if there’s a loose hose fr. Top of engine to air flow And put it back .then loose the posited wire in battery for 10 min Then put it back then start and idleling on for 30 min It may solve your engine lights on trac off on & 4wd. On And also check your transmission fluid maybe is about to change It.

GuruY23MD - Sorry that I did not check my email sooner, but here is a photo of the problem "press Fitting". I believe that it loosens when someone at a lube place checks the air filter and really lifts the duct that it is attached to. As you will notice, it is not clamped.

My 2011 RAV4 had all 3 of those lights come on today and the diagnostic test came back as “oxygen sensor circuit low voltage bank 1 sensor 2.” I had the test done for free at O’Reilly so they didn’t give me any feedback of what could be wrong. They just gave me the error message. I checked the hose and it is attached but wondering if it is considered to be loose (picture attached) and that’s possibly what is causing the problem. I don’t know much about cars at all so I am clueless.

To the left of the air filter.

Does anyone have the V6 that this is happening to?

Tina - That is a good question since the computer readout that O'reilly did for you should ony have caused the "check engine" light to come on, not the other 2. I believe that if the tubing is seated all of the way in to the fitting, then it should be okay. In your photo, it does appear to be all of the way in. Sorry that I could not give you more direction, I would get someone with a tester/reset unit to reset the error code for me.

I did find the air hose loose and I put it back in. I reset the lights and the VCS, check engine, and 4wd lights have not gone off. Is there more that it could be?

I got the lights to go off on my 2007 Rav4 by adding gas additive but it only worked for a few months. Now the lights are back on. I'll check the vacuum hose. Thanks.

Our 2007 6-cylinder RAV4 with 80k miles had the VSC, 4wd, & Check Engine lights all come on, and the engine was in a rough idle. After a few disconnecting the battery and reconnecting, the lights appeared. Another Forum said it may be due to a faulty spark plug coil. I replaced all six coils and plugs. The car now idles perfectly, and the lights don't come on. There's also a great YouTube video for the 6-cyllinder RAV4 from "2CarPros".

I have the same problem, CEL, VSC and 4WD lights on, COde-PO420. 4WD does not engage and I recently discovered that Cruise control does not start instead the CC lights continuously blinks. Does rav4 shuts off cruise control in such situation? I've heard 4wd is shut off as car thinks that its not running efficiently

I followed "Charles" advice and found that on my girlfriends 2012 RAV4 that they had now installed a pressure clamp to keep it from coming off. However, it is still a very poor design because if you go to change the air filter and are not careful, you can put a lot of pressure on the air duct. In our case, the duct had a crack in it just in front of where the tube connects to it. Fortunately I was able to clean the area and wrap it in electrical tape. I then disconnected the positive side of the battery and waited ten minutes. Restarted the car and the faults were gone. I then drove the car about ten miles and they remained off. I can only imagine what it would cost to replace the entire air duct.

I am glad that you were able to correct it on your own with some ingenuity. I am surprised that the faults were gone so quickly. Maybe that is an improvement from the 2011 model.

Hi Charles, well I thought that I had corrected it, but unfortunately the three lights came back on a couple days later. So, it looks like we will have to have the dealer check it to see what is causing the issue.

Find a friend who has an analyzer (car diagnostic tool) and he should be able to reset the computer as I had done twice. Then if the lights come back you should take it somewhere.

I have a 2012 RAV4 V6 Limited and all the lights came on on 3 separate occasions. It turns out that the battery was weak and I replaced it. That was over a year ago and the problem has never resurfaced. Sometimes it's the simple fixes that work plus I had read enough of others vainly changing expensive parts so I was skeptical. Hope this is helpful.

My RAV4 's lights also came on, flashing engine light, VSC and 4 wheel drive. Car seemed to be running a little rough too. Went to my guy and he discovered a rats nest under the manifold (?) cover, they had chewed one of the wires. He re-soldered the wires and all is good!

That is a good find. I have never seen a flashing check engine light which is supposed to spell doom if not addressed immediately. Rodents are notorious for chewing wire insulation/wires resulting in costly repairs, at times. I just upgraded to a 2016 RAV4, I have not checked under the hood for the manifold set-up, but I will soon. Thanks for your input.

I had the same problem on a 2009 Rav 4 Australian model. I had replaced the air filter element and the hose had come out of the air filter housing to inlet manifold duct. This has caused a lean mixture and the symptoms were rough idle and illumination of the engine check light, 4WD light (not in 4WD though) and traction control light. Thanks to the others here who also pointed out this possible solution.

Solved my VSC_Check Engine_4WD lights issue on 2006 RAV4 2.4L. I scanned it with OBD II (old, you may need newer scanner) and told me cylinder 2 mis-fired. I replaced all 4 spark plugs (needs to be *exact* part Iridium IFR6A11 (or the one that supersede it) and the lights went off. New issue is when I drove over 80mph, the lights came back on until I slow down. Then the lights went off and engine back to normal. I believe it is due to slightly different spark plug model (still iridium but different). I have yet to try it out but my RAV 4 drives normal under 70 mph. I am thinking to replace spark plug connector boots too.

I sorted mine by replacing the Bosch platinum spark plugs (which looked rather spent) with recommended IR - NGK spark plugs. - Start with the simplest fixes, symptoms for deficient spark plugs, idling is fine acceleration especially up hill will be relatively poor. For example if vehicles including diesel vans seem to pull off much quicker and easier than you can manage, check the plugs - Easy to replace takes about 10 to 15mins, good videos about watch if you fancy some diy save £$£

My daughter's 2012 RAV4 had CEL on and Auto LSD light flashing, took it to Autozone where they read code which indicated Mass Air Flow Sensor needed to be replaced. Took car to Pep Boys where they insisted they needed to do their own diagnostics (for a fee if they would guarantee work). I said OK and later they reported that it was just a loose hose (CEL code was wrong), which they fixed for a total of $64 for just labor (less than cost of MAF alone).

@Kael2019 I am the guy who previously posted ... Iridium IFR6A11. I suggest you rent/buy a scanner and scan your car. It is way better than guessing. If buying, get a newer scanner that can also scan older model cars. Have 2-3 issues will pay off the cost. Nowadays they are cheap (on ebay). ......... Yes, cruise control stop working is normal behavior when VSC light comes on. So far, judging prev posts, hose connections, O2 sensors, spark plugs, spark plug coil/connector boots are potential causes. ..... I was told by Dealer that transmission has nothing to do with VSC light. I do belive (take it w/ a salt) that VSC light has to do with engine running operation. Good luck!

@GuruCD9KW. I have similar issues like yours that the lights + 4x4 flashes on the dash when i go above 70. Did you try other alternatives?

Checked air manifold, looked ok, so just tightened the clamps, opened & closed gas cap securely, pulled two fuses out ( 20.& 10 amps, that replicate battery removal) & reset dash warning lights. Lights came back on after a few kms, ......... here’s the thing, system warning lights self cancelled when I started car at petrol station (after filling from approx 15 litres left in tank), what is it that causes system lights to appear “if gas cap is loose”, could be similar when gas tank is low low level.

For around £20.00 you can get a cheap dependable OBD DTC reader from Amazon. Use it to find the problem codes. The online Toyota manuals will give further details on how the specific codes are triggered and possible problem areas and also ways to Isolate the problem and necessary repairs. For example oxygen sensor isolation can be found at http://www.trav4.net/oxygen_sensor_c ircuit-422.html. Key is to discover the codes cause it is the codes causing the lights to be triggered. Sort out the codes and the lights will not come back.

I had this problem today. Filled up with too much fuel last night. The vsc, 4wd, and check engine light all came on. The check engine light was flashing. I bought a code reader and it said I had a misfire in cylinder 2. I bought 4 new iridium spark plugs and the new direct ignition coil. After I changed these I fired up the old rav and it purred like a kitten. Boom!

Thank you Charles. I replaced the engine filter on my base 2011 RAV4, and within 20 minutes the check engine light and traction control? (Slippery when wet warning light. Lol) both came on, I don't have AWD/4WD. It was a loose tube as described. The warning lights didn't turn off until I started the car the morning. I feel like I deserve a auto mechanic certificate or something, but really it belongs to Charles!

@Pop I am the GuruCD9KW and also GuruC35H8. Yes, I solved it. I replaced spark plug connector boots (proper name spark plug coil) and it disappeared. But made a mistake of buying used (but genuine) coil and finally ended up replacing again with brand new ones. So buy BRAND NEW ones for plugs and coils. If that doesn't fix the problem, you may need to rebuild the engine. In this case, a good mechanic can do compression test on individual cylinders and tell you. If you need to buy the engine, buy JDM engines directly imported from Japan (meaning much lower mileage, they got rid of engines around 50k or no more than 10 years)

20

Just answered to Pop. Here are additional info: If you buy spark plug coil from dealer, it is expensive, around $145 a piece, 4 total. A lot of times, genuine Toyota parts are relabeled Denso. So find OEM replacement. Exact spark plug model can be found in RAV4 manual/handbook. I paid about $135 for both coil set and 4 spark plugs, got them from Advanced Auto Parts. Replacing coil and plugs is easy, took 30 min - 1 hr to do it. I highly recommend Haynes manual ($7 investment) that will tell you pre-cautions etc. YouTube can be helpful but takes things with a grain of salt from utube. Use Haynes and YouTube. With Haynes, it also talk about other maintenance like changing transmission oil, thermostat, etc. Mine is 2006 196k miles and all I did was self-maintenance except one time.

I resolved this issue on my 2008 RAV4 (engine check + VSC + 4WD lights) by adding engine oil that dropped too low. Even there is a recall on oil consumption, two different dealers have not failed oil consumption test, stating that it is normal for this vehicle. I have to add oil every second week. I rid off faulty lights with a code reader yesterday which displayed a code: "P0606 ECM/PCM Processor", and today already drove 25 miles without faulty light. Hopefully it fixed this issue.

10

Actually I have not resolved this issue by adding oil. Lights came out again twice. It happened always on Mondays after car was in garage during weekend. In American Part store I had error code reading (even after I cleared it by my primitive OBD reader) that pointed to rear passenger side speed control sensor error. Then last weekend I opened rear brake and found no harness for speed sensor. I tried to pull it out of the where it mounted by unscrewing 10 mm bolts but was not able to move it. So I put the screw back and check brake pads and found that it stocked. I took the caliper assembly out, and cleaned it from rust, lubricated and made pads to move freely. Probably this caused speed control sensor to send data to CPU that was different with the one that came from left wheel sensor what brought error code. Other thing I did at the same day: I replaced O2 sensor. Today is Monday and still no lights came out. If they come back I will let you all know. Otherwise consider it is fixed and may be what I did will help you to fix this issue.

Exactly what happened to my 2021 Rav Had oil change at lube shop. Drove home 5 minute drive. Noticed all 3 lights light up on dash. Engine running rough. Looked under hood . Air intake house was not connected. I plugged it back in. Disconnect battery terminial for 5 minutes - that reset and got rid of all the warning lights. Back in business. Sounds like the guy at the lube shop knocked the hose out when he was checking the engine filter..... Wow - super stressed me Friday night after a very stress work week.

Thank you CHARLES for your answer. It worked for my Rav4 2006. The air tubes were broken, I replaced them and the Check engine and other warning lights went off. I have spent more than 1000 US$ buying replacement parts wich did not solve the problem. I am Eric from from Rwanda

10

I forgot to say in my previous posts that in addition I also replaced two small air hoses located between air filter container and engine. I also replaced spark plugs which were white what means that engine was overheated. That is why I had excessive oil consumption. The air hoses looked normal but had little cracks at their ends. Anyway all what I did fixed the problem. After O2 sensor replacement car started run better and hopefully engine would not be overheated and oil consumption would be better. In conclusion all factors could cause these 3 lights to come out: O2 sensor, spark plugs, air hoses leak, speed sensors error caused by sticky rear brake pads or by caliper assembly. When install new pads, always grind theirmetal ends so they move freely in caliper assembly. Do not expect that they would fit properly as sold.

My 2008 rav 4 is doing this and it appears to be the crankshaft sensor

20

By the way,the heck engine and other lights came back after changing the air hoses. It went for only for about 10 Km and the warnings came back. I AM GOING TO CHANGE THE SPARK PLUGS and I will come back here to tell you the updates. Eric

If your battery died recently then you just need to reset the anti theft system. This will get rid of the vsc, 4wd and check engine light. Turn your vehicle to on position, leave it there 10 min and then start your vehicle. All lights will turn off. :)

10

If you reset lights by disconnecting power from battery, you erase all data, and if you going to do state inspection, your car won't pass it because of missing data. Then if you have real problems, the lights will come back again. Never disconnect the battery before annual inspection. Otherwise you have to drive a lot to restore patterns saved in memory.

I have a 06 RAV4 same exact issue for the last 2 weeks rear wheel sensors problem fixed hope this was helpful

20

It was the same thing on our RAV4 VSC check engine and 4 x 4 light war on all the time changed the rear ABS sensors lights are now all off hope this helps

I also thought that sensors caused it but I just replaced brake pads and warped rotors because brake pads did not slide well and sensors were out of sync. Sensors can cause this problem as well. If you replace sensors together with brake pads, you will never know for sure what exactly caused this failure because dealers would like to charge you for the sensors also.

Had this exact same problem happen recently with my 2011 RAV 4 limited. After $1200 of dealership work, the problem was still not fixed. They then wanted to perform another $1800 of additional work - with no guarantees of fixing the issue. That is when I took matters into my own hands. Did some research and bought an error code reader on Amazon for $50. Found that the code was P045 - which indicated a small leak in the evaporation system. This was causing the "check-engine" light to come on. The other 2 lights (4WD and VSC) lights come on because these systems use the throttle function of the vehicle to help maintain control. If the evap. system is not working at peak performance, then they shut-off automatically - hence the warning lights. As I continued to research, I found that 50% of the time this error condition seemed to be caused by a problem with the gas cap not being seated properly. My gas cap looked fine, but a replacement was only $20 on Amazon ... I figured why not try? After replacing the cap the problem immediately went away and has stayed that way for ~12 months now. I did put the old cap back-on and within 2 days, I had the same error lights come back. Verified !!! For $20, I would highly recommend replacing the gas cap before any additional repair expenses are incurred. Hope that this post helps others in the same situation.

I have had the same problem also with my Toyota Rav 4 , 2008 2.2 D-Cat. All three lights were on, it happened while I was driving on high way after I filled the tank. I drove my vehicle for like 800 km like this without any problem. This morning I showed it to my Toyota service, the problem was DPF filter luckily they’ll change it and it’s not that expensive.

I have a similar problem on my RAV4 2007 the vsc abs and 4wd on my dashboard there just on I need help

10

Just read all posts above. Different things could cause it, and probably combination of them contribute to this issue. Just try to fix one by one. I would start from replacing old air hoses around engine and air filter.

I had the alternator replaced because the amp were reading too high. All the lights went off but the VSC and traction control. I was told by the mechanic a sensor need to be replaced. The car rides great, just can't use cruise control.

I had this problem too, check engine system came on, then check 4x4 system straight after and my abs light came on and the engine began losing power. Checked hoses and fuel cap etc etc and turns out it’s the dpf is clogged. Waiting to get it regenerated and praying it works and I won’t be forking out 6k to replace it
