Brand new cv axels torn, blame mechanic??
I have a 2007 Audi A4 and about 5 weeks ago
had both front cv axels replaced. About a
week ago they start creaking, cracking,
popping all that so I call the mechanic up and
he tells me to bring it in. He puts it on the lift
and the left axels is just torn all apart and the
internals were wearing down, the right side
had a small gash and both axels had all the
grease everywhere.
He’s trying to make it seem like it’s something
I did somehow asking me if I’d hit a curb or if
I’ve been slamming it in park, just all around
stupid questions. Then he asks if I have any
beef with someone because they might have
slashed my cv axels which is in my opinion a
stupid thing to come up with.
Anyways he ordered me new axles but I want
to know what he did wrong to cause this. I
guess they could have just been defective but
the chances of both being defective is small.

I never thought it was my fault, I drive with too much care I was just wondering if anyone might have a guess as to what he did wrong with the installation.
Are you sure the CV joints and axels were actually replaced ? You can over-stress the boots when installing them, but that is actually not easy to do. It could be that the parts were old and the boots already dried out (not likely) or otherwise defective. I suppose the mechanic could have cut them when unpacking or installing them. In any case, I would find a new mechanic. I cannot think of any driving style that could cause that kind of boot damage. Even hitting a curb should not cause the boot to tear like that.
