Is it possible to check the fluid in the differential 04 Buick Rainier v8?

I just bought an 04' Buick Rainier and it has started making noises that sound like a playing card is
in a bicycle's spokes and I was told to check the differential fluid. I have no idea how to do this.  
Any help or guidance would be greatly appreciated. I always relied on someone who did all of my
mechanic work and now that person is not around anymore so I'm trying to learn everything myself
which sometimes can be difficult. Thank you for any help you can provide.

Find out where the noise is coming from , A differential will have a metal plug type thing , Your experience may differ

The front diff will have a large metal plug right next to the axle shaft. something similar to picture.
