can I check my own transmission fluid?

Auto makers make it very difficult to do that now, you may need a special tool to check fluid level, and it has to be done at the proper temperature. Check your service interval, if you're not there yet and are not experiencing problems with the transmission, then leave it alone. If you're at the service interval, then have the dealership or a tranny shop deal with it. (It usually involves flushing the fluid and replacing filters as well as running diagnostics on shift solenoids.)
