if my coolant temp sensor is bad on my 1998 volvo s90 is bad will that make the car start but not stay running

car was running fine I went in store and came back out and it wouldn't start until it set for a while , it will start but cuts off after a few seconds , if the coolant temp sensor is bad will that cause the problem or is it some thing else
