Question type: Maintenance & Repair

car overheated and had to be towed the tow yard was much closer then my
house when I went to pick the car up with the necessary fluids ( I have free
towing i didn't have the money at the time for fluids) the tow company said
the rear seat air bags had deployed and could not release the car to drive but
could tow it to the closest dealer or my home both of which are about 50
miles away an a novice repair the air bags or must it go to a Volvo dealer. I
didn't even know it had rear seat air bags but I just pulled it to the side of the
road I didn't hit anything.

I would challenge them over them holding your car if they won't tow it to your home for free. I doubt there is an legal basis for it. Unless you have rear seat passengers the fix can probably wait.

I also would check into why the rear seat airbags deployed in the first place. It takes alot of impact to deploy rear seat airbags. The airbags must of deployed while in their care. I'd lawyer up and take them to court.

I agree, airbags don't just deploy without a reason! To my knowledge a vehicle is held for investigation if the airbags do NOT deploy in an accident! I'd suggest talking to a local police officer about getting the vehicle released first. I think the biggest hurdle is going to be the vehicle is 21 years old and probably doesn't have a very high retail value. See if the vehicle is damaged too. It could have literally fallen off the tow truck when they were unloading it at their yard. You're not going to pay storage fees either!! Hope that helps! Jim

totally agree with Js. The car is old and the tow driver may have been hard/ ruff with the car back end area to get those bags to deploy. OR there is a deficiency in the sensor and it 's old of course and so it just blew up over age. i doubt an attorney would touch the case since it's old car and OOW. but I would definitley research to see if that ymm had issues on rear air bags. good luck

After the general manager spoke with my insurance agent to confirm the rear air bags had deployed and there was no damage to the car. The general manager called me today to advise me a mistake it was a Volvo like mine and that my car was just fine and they would take 2-days from the 6 day storage fee. Could I update my insurance agent. So, sorry for your time but, the answers were helpful -maybe the tow company read them
