I'm replacing the head gasket on my
2006 Volvo s40 t5 2.5 and I'm trying to
surface the heads on my own. What's
the best way to go about it.
Don't attempt it, it's aluminum and if it isn't done by a machine designed to make it flat, you can ruin the head. Another thing that should be done is a pressure test, sometimes you can't see hairline cracks in the combustion chambers or between cylinders, your only creating more problems by trying to shortcut it.

Agree that a specialist may be needed. Although you may be able to check the head surface straightness yourself with a steel straight edge and a feeler gauge you may miss things that would lead to tearing it down again. If this engine has a huge number of miles on it and the bank account allows I would consider a rebuilt cylinder head. Otherwise it needs to go to an automotive machine shop.
