Repair will cost more than car is worth

Took my 2006 Mini Cooper S convert to the local dealer for a free "Fall Maintenance Check Up" this weekend. I've owned the car for just about 3 years and have had an occasional issue with very harsh downshifts from the Steptronic trans, so I mentioned it on check in. Well, when my car was done there was a chat with the mechanic and he told me my trans was failing, it could break at any time and said he would not drive it as it is. Only fix is total replacement that goes for about $7000. Car has 65k and I only drive it 2-3000 miles per year.  Used car guy told me they would've offered $3500 for trade, but with trans problem they do not want it at all. Suggestions?

This smells like a bit of a scam. A "free" diagnosis where they tell you that you should pay them a small fortune to fix it. At the miles you drive the trans could last a decade or more.

Have the fluid changed. Way cheaper and may fix your problem. Mini says it a lifetime fluid but that's BS Mine does the same thing. Take a look at google , there is a class action suit against mini for that year/ trans.

I had that bad downshift issue since my mini was new. I recently traded it away. The trans got worse and worse. Codes said bad trans module and pressure sensor. steptronic trans sucked
