i get smoke from the exhaust after shifting between 2wd and 4wd, what would be the cause?

the smoke will dissipate after a while, no smoke when shifting back to 2wd

Sounds like rings or maybe valve guides. Just a guess but your truck probably has high miles on it. Try using a better grade oil and maybe a heavier grade as well.

its not a lot of oil, but it on happens when Im shifting, if it were rings or valve guides wouldn't it burn oil all the time?

Never said how many miles on her, assuming a lot, it is a characteristic for oil to seep threw valve guides & seals on a Chevy. with lots of miles. Don't sound like rings to me.
