2006 VW Passat crank's but won't start, already tried a couple things?

Asked by Kevin Dec 01, 2018 at 01:35 PM about the 2006 Volkswagen Passat 2.0T

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

So my 2006 Passat 2.0T is not starting, it cranks but it wont start. When it first
broke down I replaced the fuel pump thinking that was the issue but after
installing the new pump it failed to start.

I had a mechanic come look to see what was wrong with it, so spark seems to
be okay, fuel i'm not completely sure yet but based on the replacement of the
puel pump I'm assuming that's good aswell, especially since I can hear the
pump priming when I stick my key in the ignition. He also checked the timing
belt and everything seemed okay.

He reccomended that I replace the crankshaft sensor and camshaft sensor. I
replaced the crank sensor the other and It failed to start again, so my last hope
is this camshaft sensor but I'm not sure if that sensor would keep the car from
starting since I'm not really a very knowledgable car person. Any thoughts?

Does it seem to crank over faster than normal?

Throwing parts at it is expensive and foolish. Take it to someone that can diagnose and fix it properly or take it to the dealership for evaluation.

Bruce, it cranks normally (speed wise) but it sound a bit higher pitch if that makes sense, Bob, I'm pretty tight on money right now so I'm attempting to see if I can get some help getting it started first without spending hundreds to get it diagnosed.

My initial thought is tensioners. My wife's 2.0T did the same thing. Hers did seem to turn over a tad faster. The higher pitch leads me to think that there's no compression. If the guy who initially looked at the belt is a friend, maybe have him pop the covers off and see if there's any tensioner damage. My concern is that motor has a timing belt AND a chain and surprisingly not Many know this but I would ask If he only checked the belt side and not the chain side.

Bruce, actually I just went out there right now and checked the engine cranking actually sounds normal now or almost lower pitch but im not sure, I also just checked the schrader valve and fuel came out so I'm almost certain fuel isn't the issue. I'll check those tensioners out in a bit, but first I'm going to replace the camshaft sensor and see if that get's it running, google online and apparently the camshaft sensor can also prevent the car from starting so I'm hoping this will be the fix, I apreciate the help alot; instead of telling me to take it to a dealer and diagnose it, like of course I can do that, but the point is im trying to save money by trying myself and learning along the way. Cheers Bruce
