What is this part called? 02 Passat

What is the part called that is to the left of the engine as you're standing over it. the part is about 8 in from the top of the engine. It has a small tube going to the top back of the engine.its cylinder shape with what looks like a metal shield on it which has 0801 imprinted on it?

That's a catalytic converter. It looks small and there may be a larger one downstream. That's a O2 sensor in the center of the picture.
