I think my transmission is out :(

I thought I was doing right when I bought my 1st  
used car. It's a 2001 Volkswagen Jetta.  I know I
should have taken a mechanic with me but I do not
know any mechanics. I have only had it for a week
and it slows down and doesn't pick up speed. Now
a funky smell came out. I tried to check if it has
transmission oil but I can't find anything. I have
gone to mechanics but they say they do not
service Volkswagen.  Can someone please advise
me????

First used car, Let give you some belated advice, do not buy used German Auto's. Always have used Auto's fluid checked or changed out, which you also check before buying.

What you need to do is find a local mechanic who works on imports. You can easier search online for a place, I use google maps and "Search nearby" and type in 'import garage'. Also ask some friends or co workers. On a 2001 Jetta with an automatic, you can't check the fluid unless you have access to a lift and remove a plug from the bottom of the transmission. You need to check out the smell and the reason it is not running right. The sooner the better as damage can be occurring. You have the car now, so you will be spending a little more money to get it to the way you like it. Buying a used car you always will, just how much is the question. Also is there any lights lit up on the dash as your driving, like a check engine light? If so, the mechanic can scan for the codes to find out what is causing the issue. Once you find a good mechanic, you can keep the car running like new with proper maintenance. Good Luck.

I did goggle for the nearest VW mechanic but he is over 10 miles away and that is why I ask on this site to see if anyone can advise me so I can try and do something to make it to the mechanic. No lights are on, on the dashboard only the funky smell and not picking up speed. Ok, thanks once again I appreciate it. Have a great day.

Is the funky smell from exhaust if so you may have a clogged Catalytic converter.
