According to VW you should change it at 90,000miles, but normally last longer, between 100,000miles-120,000miles

If it is a VR6 engine change it and the timing chain guides around 100k mi. But if it is a 1.8t (which uses a belt) eventhou it is recomended at 100k, change it BEFORE 70k mi. The belt tends to fail in that range. It was a big problem when those cars were first getting to that mileage.
