Sounds like an exhaust leak?

Asked by JMH3 Oct 21, 2011 at 10:37 PM about the 2005 Volkswagen Golf GTI 1.8T 2-Door FWD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Hi All!

I am the proud owner of an '05 1.8t with a 5 spd. 66k miles on the car, I bought it used and have had it about 3 months. About a week ago I fired it up to go to work in the morning and it sounded a bit strange as if it had a small exhaust leak coming from the passenger side under the dash area perhaps. After it warmed up and 1-2 miles driving down the road the noise went away, strange. Since then it has been a recurring thing, comes and goes with no apparent reason.
Anyone know what this might be? Loose bolts perhaps?
   Thanks!

Common on a gti, cold temps expose a small exhaust leak on the 1.8t. I hear it all the time in the winter. Look at the connection from the downpipe to the converter and get a membership to www.vwvortex.com
