strange problem

i have a strange problem in that my temp gauge flucuates pretty much all the way down most of
the time while im driving especially when going down hill at idle it stays right in the middle but i
can smell something burning like anti freeze or maybe oil not sure....yet the heat always works
and for the most part the car runs smoothly......anyone have any ideas???

CHECK YOUR FLUIDS REGULARLY. IF SOMETHING IS BURNING, IT WILL GET LOW.

i had sort of the same problem. i changed my coolant temp sensor and it still read cold. then i changed my thermostat and now it always stays in the middle
