All MODERN cars are money pits, if you don't take care of them. This TDI appears to be in excellent condition, even though the miles are high. If you can get a CARFAX history that would help. Concerns would be most recent timing belt/water pump service and clutch replacement. The poorly installed radio gives me pause and should be a point of contention for a lower price. Offer $3000 ( a bit more than dealer probably paid ) and haggle from there. These cars can go 500K with proper care and maintenance. 50MPG highway is not uncommon. Also, check out the TDI forums for tips and information. The VW community is strong and will provide tremendous support and enthusiasm. Enjoy.

Totally agree with Scott. I've owned many VW diesels. I currently own a 96 Passat TDI, just bought for $1500 CAD: 290K km. Also have 85 Golf diesel with 500K km. Brake and suspension work has been done, but with maintenance, the engines just keep going.
