i have a 1989 honda civic and the problem is that when i am at a stoplight, in drive, my car will jump forward.

My 1989 honda civic with automatic transmition, jumps forward when I am at a stoplight in the drive position.  It doesn't do it if I put it in park. When it jumps it also reeves the engine up too.  Will this be a difficult job or expensive?  The shop said this would be a transmition problem.  It's done this for as long as I had my car around 8 months.

Find a better mechanic, quickly. Your car is idling too high, caused by either a sticking throttle plate, bad Idle Air Control valve (IAC) or an intake gasket leak, or something similar. Ill guess your car is idling around 1500 rpm or higher. You need a second opinion. I'll go with the intake gasket is shot. Good luck!
