Fuel relay

When trying to start the vehicle and you put
the key in and right before cranking shouldn't
you hear the fuel pump and gauge if not could
that be the fuel relay stopping the fuel pump
from working?

You're on the right track. If you hear a click and no whirring, your relay may still have burned contacts inside, or your pump may be bad. You'll have to test the wire right before the pump to see that electricity is actually getting to it for about 1.5 seconds when your assistant turns the key. Turn the key and no click? Maybe a loose or bad relay, blown fuse, or (rarely) bad ignition switch.
