Do I need an idler pulley to replace A/C compressor?

In another thread, I mentioned removing my A/C compressor (the A/C has not been
used for 24 years). I got a great suggestion to buy an idler pulley to replace it, and I
did. Turns out the pulley/bracket did not fit as advertised by the seller (not the
responder to my question---he was great!). So that made me think---if I was only
running the A/C compressor off of that belt, and nothing else (see photo), why replace
the compressor with an idler pulley? The belt drives no other accessories at all. Any
good reason not to just remove it and the belt?

I would just remove the A/C belt it shouldnt change the operation of the motor.

Absolutely, just remove the belt. What the other responder was talking about was for a serpentine belt that drives all engine accessories including the A/C unit.
