There might be one more step in the aforementioned process, depending on your local dealer. When I lost the one and only key to my 190D I called my local MB dealer to get a new key. Mercedes Benz of Bellevue (WA) told me that I needed to supply them with my proof of ownership but also, I had to BRING IN THE VEHICLE to their dealership so that they could verify the VIN. This for a vehicle that, charitably, had a value of $3,000. The other two MB dealers in my area, Seattle and Lynnwood, told me the same thing. So I paid for a $200 tow to bring my vehicle to the closest dealership. I now have 3 keys for the 190D and the same for my GLK and my SL.
