Limp Home diagnosis on 1997 Mercedes

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Car wouldn't start. Dead battery from being
garaged & not driven. Recharged & then
drove to mechanic (about 7 miles) could
only drive in first gear all the way there.
Mechanic Diagnosis said "limp home"
mode.  Mechanic had it for months, not
able to work on it because of health
problems.  Never had problems with car
transmission or otherwise. I know garaging
a vehicle @ not driving is not good, but that
is my problem. We are having it towed to a
mechanic that has the yearo computer
diagnosis. Any ideas what the problem
could be?

Well, we lucked out for now. Mechanic put new battery in car & reset to original codes etc. runs great. Things that weren't running properly are now running. The only thing that isn't working or we are afraid to check is the convertible top going down. The red button that you press for top to go down isn't constantly blinking. It may work, but afraid to check, afraid the top will get stuck half way down & we can't get it back in place. The last time the top didn't work it was because if a fuse & then we had a leak of what looked like hydraulic fluid by the back right tire. For now we are glad to have it out of shop. Will wait to check on top working. I think the car was possibly going into limp mode long before we had the trouble.
