2000 Mercedes E320 fuel pump maybe?

Asked by GuruTRWNX Jul 14, 2018 at 02:56 PM about the 2000 Mercedes-Benz E-Class E 320 4MATIC Wagon

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

My lady ran out e320 out of gas! She put gas back in it
and drove and it started running rough, losing power, and
stalling. I got it home and changed the fuel filter, filled it
with premium and gum out injector cleaner. I’ve driven it
about 40 miles and It runs much better but still isn’t right.
As long as your light footed it will slowly accelerate but if
you try to give it more gas it loses power. I believe it’s not
getting enough fuel. Called oreillys and they said $230 for
a pump. I see them online much less but want to buy a
quality one.

I would verify that it is a fuel pump issue first. See what the fuel pressure is at the rail and ideally under load. Yes they do go bad but usually they work or they just all out fail. On many Mercedes they have a saddle tank with two suction lines with screens or socks attached to them. Those parts can and will get clogged if the tank goes dry. The other concern or possible issue is clogged injectors. So my advice ( as a former owner of a Benz for 15 years) is to have the above items checked first, if not you could be spending more. Good Luck!
