Dodge truck with going to an aluminum drive shaft..

Asked by Damande Dec 19, 2016 at 10:30 PM about the 2006 Dodge RAM 3500 ST Quad Cab LB 4WD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

The two piece rear drive shaft I have now is
in need of repairs..  Been looking around
for used ones and such and see they make
aluminum drive shafts that are one piece
which would eliminate the carrier bearing.
Does the one piece aluminum drive shaft
harder on splines in the transfer case and
the yoke of the drive shaft since it doesn't
have the support of the carrier or is it
actually better to have the aluminum drive
shaft versus the heavier original no matter
if the truck hauls heavy loads or a daily
driver?  And does have the one piece shaft
affect purchasing a lift kit in the future?
Any input is appreciated.  Thanks.

If it is lighter as it should be that would be a good thing. If you plan on an extreme lift then there will be issues with U joints but there are ways to deal with that. I would discus your lift plans with the drive shaft seller before buying.
