TIPM REPLACEMENT

Asked by Katie Dec 21, 2018 at 04:46 PM about the 2006 Dodge RAM 3500 Laramie Quad Cab 4WD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I have a 2006 Dodge Ram 3500 4X4
5.9 Diesel that I have to replace the
tipm on and there seems to be some
confusion about whether it is "shift on
the fly" or not. I was taught that ment
you don't have to get out and lock the
hubs to shift into 4wd but I don't know
now and to get the right part I need to
know. Lol

Shift on the fly isn't just meant for the on the dash transfer case electrical selector. Shift on the fly means you can shift in and out of 4 wheel high while still driving down the road. For that matter Even vehicles with locking hubs can be shifted on the fly providing they either have "automatic hubs" (a ford design) or the manual hubs are locked in the 4 wheel drive position. (Keep in mind there are recommended maximum speeds at which you should shift into 4 wheel drive).
