is the door latch already latched? you can tell by looking at the latch on the door and if the open area where the striker enters the door is closed off with a metal piece then its already closed and will not let you close the door completely. It should look like a "c" when in the open position. If it is closed off insert a screwdriver into the hole where the striker sits and while putting pressure towards the interior (like if the door was opening away from the screwdriver) pull on a door handle and the screwdriver will pop the latch back open. Then shut your door as normal. If your door closes all the way but the latch refuses to keep it there then you probably need a new latch
