I have a 1998 dodge 1500 with the 5.9L engine. Engine running hot.

My son has been driving the truck. Today I replaced the water pump and removed the thermostat.  The engine still heats up very quickly, like in less than a mile of driving. The temp will actually lower if you let the truck idle. Oil was low so added oil but the oil pressure is still running high. 40 is mid range and it is between 40 and 110.

If you change the water pump then most likely it's going to be that it has been run hot enough to hurt the head or head gasket only other thing it could be would be a radiator hose sucking shut bottom hose would be collapsing under throttle and opening up at idle it's possible that the radiator could be stopped up but not likely in all likelihood it was run a lot hotter than you were told
