96 Ram 1500 able to reverse and drive in first gear. No 2nd or drive.

Vehicle drove without problems. I didn't drive over anything that might have caused damage. Parked, when I began to drive away, noticed it didn't shift. Fluid level fine, shifter doesn't seem to be damaged, hoses attached.

I'm not up-to-date on Dodge transmissions but it seems as though 2nd gear is the weakest mechanically. It is possible to have a transmission that is mechanically sound but the seals are old and hard and tend to bypass pressure - so much so that it just won't shift. Call around to see if there's a transmission shop that will diagnose it for cheap or free. It is old enough to have such a problem. A quality remanufactured Transmission will cost around $1800 and have a 3 year, high mileage warranty - usually better than a tranny shop can provide. Swapping the Trans out yourself is a big job but very straight forward.
