When you shift an automatic transmission into reverse, the transmission position sensor (TPS) tells the PCM to shift the transmission into reverse. If it doesn't, the sensor might be faulty. Also, a worn & leaking valve body, especially on an old untested transmission, might leak and create opposing pressures between gears that can/will inhibit shifting into any gear, but especially into reverse.
