engine dying

Asked by donotfix Nov 29, 2018 at 09:35 PM about the 2006 Dodge Dakota SLT Quad Cab 4WD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

My 2006 Dodge dakota truck dies when putting it in drive or reverse.   i
restart it, then it works fine until the first time I have to stop.   the engine then
dies.   Until the engine gets up to operating temp, the engine dying continues
when I slow down or stop.   The last mechanic I had look at it, said the
probelm is in the transmission.  Might be a sitcky valve that makes the
engine react as if the transmission is in park.

I had a similar problem with an 07 Durango. Engine would stall out when I came to a stop. So I would put the transmission in Neutral as I would come to a stop. Once the engine was warmed up, problem would go away. I just had the transmission serviced including fluid change and filter. So after chasing the problem, I finally gave up and took it to the dealer. They said the transmission oil filter had been installed wrong and it was cracked. I took it back to the tranny shop that did the work and they drained the tranny fluid and put a new filter in and the problem went away. The torque convertor was locking up due to low vacuum pressure.
