Transmission filter and fluid

Asked by Days01 Sep 20, 2020 at 05:23 AM about the 1991 Chevrolet S-10 Extended Cab RWD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I have a 1991 Chevy S10  automatic 4.3L. I want to change
the filter, my owner's manual says to use Dextron II but
does not tell me how much I need. I just bought it and has
200,000 miles. Hitter much fluid do I need and should I use
some if the old fluid with lucas transmission fix or just new
fluid?

You'll want to buy Dex/Merc fluid. For a dump and fill it's around 5 qts, pick up a couple extra just in case you need more. You will add once the pan is back on and check the level via the dipstick to get to the proper level.

Unless the transmission fluid is burnt, it's leaking, or you know the vehicle has had regular transmission fluid changes, I'd leave it alone. A lot of times changing the transmission fluid on an older model can cause problems. The dirt and junk in there actually helps keep it going. I definitely wouldn't put an additive in there either. Hope that helps! Jim
