In the past, I had an older ford truck, the column shift broke. I take the shift linkage loose from the side of transmission, that piece that the linkage hooks onto, I shifted it by hand, into drive. Bypassed the neutral switch so it would start in drive. Put your foot on the brake and start, take off. I couldn't park up against a curb or anything in front of me cause I only had drive gear. when I parked, I set the parking brake and used wheel chocks to keep vehicle from moving. As you see there are many safety issues for you and people around your vehicle. At the time, I was working a lot of hours, dark when I went to work, Dark when I got home, didn't have time to do much. I had to have the vehicle driveable, at the time. I believe I eventually went to the salvage yard and got a steering column that would work. Replaced the old one. That was a 70 ford pickup. What I did wasn't safe. Safety is your responsibility for yourself and people around your vehicle. Make sure the problem is in your steering column, before trying, anything.
