Charging system

Asked by GuruHX41Y Jul 13, 2019 at 09:45 AM about the 2004 Ford F-250 Super Duty XL Extended Cab 4WD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

With 2 new batteries, new alternator(s) and replacing plug to alternator, 12
volts is the most I get when checking alternator. Radio quits, instrument
cluster and power windows quit next. Finally engine shuts off. Process taking
less time to get to engine shutdown. Made it 100 miles from home the first
time. Now any trip around town is risky.

If the battery is down, use a charger to charge it up. What about battery cables and generator wiring circuits? Any generator charging trouble codes, I saw several possibilities. These are po codes. To check codes, yourself, at the least, you need an obd2 code reader that will work on your vehicle. A huge problem, blown fuse 45, 04 ford super duty trucks, overdrive wire shorting to steering column, that also disables charging. Are you using new or rebuilt generators? It seems rebuilders have a tough time correctly rebuilding ford generators. If you go to the dealership and buy a brand new, high priced generator, will it fix your problem, I don't know? That's all I can think of at the moment. good luck

Just to add, you can put it in the shop and let them worry about it. Believe me I understand frustration, when i get that way, I'm useless, I have to to walk away from it for a while, come back with fresh mind.
