length of the dipstick on 250 ford-1996

just put 5 quart of oil in my f-250, 1996 pkup. still shows nothing on the dpstick. bought used.  how do i know if this is the right dipstick? something should be showing, it isnt on the ground.

http://justgivemethedamnmanual.com/ford/1996-ford-f-250-owners-manual shows every engine available, 4.9, 5.0, 5.8, 7.5 all hold 5 quarts. So you do have a too-short dip-stick

http://www.autopartswarehouse.com/sku/Spectre/Oil_Dipstick/S715723.html says the dipstick should measure 21" for 5.0 (302) or 5.8 (351)
