Ford F150 is not coming out of drive but shifter moves freely

Asked by Pjblev Jul 18, 2020 at 02:13 AM about the 2004 Ford F-150 Lariat Ext. Cab

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I just bought a 2004 F150 Lariat and drove perfec r
ly fine shooting good and no lights on passed
smog no problem. Then today I went to put it in
park and realized it was already in park and that I
just drove like that. So I gave it some gas and sure
enough it drove in park. So then I tried to go into
reverse and nothing still went forward when I gave
it gas. Tried park same thing still went forward
when I gave it gas. Turned it off to see if it would
just reset and now it won't start figured its in drive
still but I was able to push it which I thought it
would only do that in neutral and the shifter will go
all the way up and down but its not catching
anything it feels like. I don't know anything about
vehicles really besides basic oil change and things
basic like that so any help on what to do or what
this is would be great.

Shift linkage under the dash may have come lose. Connected with two machine screws which sometimes come lose on Fords. I suspect the repair is beyond your capability, but not difficult.
