4.6 swap

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I have a 2001 f150 4.6 that leaks water out
between head and block. Would I be better
off to swap the engine instead of pulling
head off? If so would a 4.6 out of a 2004
crown Vic work?

If your 2001 F-150 has been well maintained, I probably would try for head gaskets. That way you know what you have. A used engine that has no service history might be a gamble and may not be a direct fit due to differences in the belt routing for the accessories.

No, it would not work. 2004 has has phaser system to adjust timing. you will have a check engine light at all times because the computer in your 2001 would not be able to make this adjustment. There's a water line on your 2001 that runs from water pump to the back of the engine to passenger side head, make sure that's not where the leak is

The water is coming from the side somewhere under the manifold bolts dripping on exhaust

You think a sealer would fix it. I look at dura-seal and heal-a-seal. Which product would work best with the aluminum head and steel block

Well, if u want to do it right, do a head job. I've used blue devil and didn't have any issues with it

I guess any brand used you would have to chance the ports stopping up. How much does it cost to get a head checked and milled if needed

I found water on the 3rd from front spark plug on both sides when I pulled coils. Would that be a intake gasket leak?

Yes, hopefully it's just the gasket but make sure to check intake body for cracks as well

Could the water leak from intake make it look like a head gasket leak. Should I go ahead and do the head gasket since I have the head about ready to come off

Will my 2003 ford explorer 4.6 v8 engine fit in a ford f-150?
