ford f150 tranny?

so i have a 2001 ford f150 xlt 4wd v8 5.4 and it has a ton of miles (215000). i am
thinking the tranny will eventually go out and ill need either a new one or get a new car.
i kinda like my truck so id probably go with a new tranny. i want to make it a manual if i
do. how much more would it cost to do a manual conversion instead of just putting a
automatic back in? if its not that big of a difference then ill be all for it but if its a huge
difference in price then it might not be worth it. so yeah im just wondering the difference
in price. thanks guys! any comments and tips will help. stories of how you did it would
be nice too.

Switch to a standard transmission is a lot more than just putting it in. The electronics are one PIA that you will have to deal with.

I have had trucks for many decades, all Fords, and have never replaced a tranny. My oldest is a 96 with over 300K miles on it. A childhood friend owns a family tranny business. He states it is impossible for someone who drives a vehicle as it should to tear up a transmission. The main problem is people almost never service their transmission. He states; forget about the 90K bull in the owners manual. Bring it to a shop, spend a hundred bucks every 40K miles, and have the fluid and filter changed.
