2000 f-150 transmission failure?

Asked by 3stgs Jul 20, 2014 at 09:42 AM about the 2000 Ford F-150 Lariat Extended Cab SB

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

My 2000 F-150 with 4.6L and automatic w/OD is having transmission
issues. It started a couple of months ago with banging / slipping from a
stop occasionally, then downshifting from OD to third when going about
50 mph sometime. Now, maybe 100-150 miles later, it will only shift
from first to second. No slipping, just like third and OD is gone. When it
has tried to go into third, the engine will just rev and nothing grabs, like
its in neutral. Fluid was fine, looked good, no burnt smell, changed it to
see if that would help. The truck has 125k miles, complete history of
tranny is unknown. I know this is a tough one to diagnose, any
thoughts?

You waited about 100- to 150 miles to long to bring it to a shop. Transmission work is not an "in the driveway on a cool day job."
