If starter just clicks first I would check to make sure battery is charged if it is charged then remove and clean battery terminals then reinstall if still makes clicking noise you have a bad starter.

Ok I was hoping it was something to do with the fact I can't get it in gear with the shaft but it won't start in neutral either. Someone mentioned a relay reset button on the transmission. Is this possible or is the starter really the next thing after the battery?

Did you check the solenoid? Check the net for the procedure to bypass it to see if the vehicle starts. If it does, change the solenoid.

I need help too..... over 12v to the battery.... if I jump with screw driver it starts, if I put a jumper to the S post on the solenoid it starts.... turn the key and NOTHING happens 2001 F150 5.4 4x4 auto also I am getting 7volts from the wire that goes to the S post not 12v thanks for any help

The next thing I would look into is the ignition switch not just where the key goes in but the electrical connections in the steering column that goes to the ignition switch. Will have to remove steering column cover to get to the connections.

that might be over my head :( I know the pointer showing if in P, N, R D, is off too... I moved that around and it still didn't start.... how hard is it to take apart steering column? a few years back i replaced a Ignition switch in a 280zx and put in a toggle switch and a push button starter

Sorry Mina that I did not answer your question earlier. No there is no relay that you can reset on the transmission. Did you try tapping on the starter and someone starting vehicle at the same time ?
