Why will my 1998 Ford F-150 not start?

I attempted to start my truck. Dead. Wouldn't start. I tried jumping the truck, no luck. I put in a new battery and when I turned the key to the on position all my dash lights came on like normal but when I turned the key to start the truck everything cut out. Dead.  I disconnected the negative battery cable then reconnected the battery cable, again all my lights came on like normal but when I turned the key everything cut out again. Dead.   Is there a short somewhere?  What gives man?

there is a starter relay you may check...get your owners manual locate it and exchange with a similar one...also check the anti- theft light is not flashing very fast...this means you need both keys coded again...if this is the case you will need 2 keys to start the engine
