My 98 Ford XLT extended cab won't shift out of park into any other gear unless its off please help

Won't shift into any other gear unless its off.

Check to see if the brake lights work. If they do not you likely have a bad brake switch at the pedal and or a blown fuse that goes to it. fuse 13 should be the one.

Brake light switch would do it. A very low battery, or dead battery will also do it. Hopefully it is not a broken park pawl.
