1997 f150 4.2: will start without starter ground but will only click with wire connected.

Asked by calmdeadheart Jul 11, 2015 at 04:12 PM about the 1997 Ford F-150 XL LB

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

the truck would only click when trying to start. while checking for voltage at the starter i found out it would crank with jumper cables hooked to the ground wire at the starter and the frame. after removing the ground cable from the starter the truck is cranking but will just click if i reattach the ground cable to the starter. should i just leave the cable off? i only use the truck occasionally.
