Check wiring going to starter if start wire is off or loose not telling starter to turn when key is turned on. Also maybe ignition switch or bad neutral safety switch. To test for bad safety switch if vehicle is an automatic put in neutral and try to start sometimes this works.

It's a standard and the battery was hooked up backwards in the dark..so tomorrow when I get it off the side of the road I will check the starter wire ..this is Greek too me I sure appreciate your help

but also I fixed that then replaced the alternator and it started and acted like it was charging until I put it in gear ..then my gages quit working and it started backfiring and didn't make it far
