Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I have a 1996 f150 5.0l xlt 4x4 with the
4r70w auto in it... for some reason the only
year tranny that can be put in it is the 96..
well my tranny went out, and the lowest
price Iv seen is $1200! But I found a 4r70w
from a 94 f150 with a 5.0 4x4 for $500, why
doesn't it match up with my 96? What can
be changed for it to fit? I'm 16 and have
started working on fords last year, I will be
doing all this work my self, as I don't really
have any money left after I buy what ever I
will need for my truck.. please help!

It is a EMC issue is all abot I have taken on chevs when they told me they would not work and every thing worked fine just had a light to put up with. To me if it bolts up and the converter bolds run it and put up with the lightmine had the lock up converter I had a guy build me a 350 turbo with out the over drive and it worked great. mine was a 1989 and put a built 79 or 80 trans with out lock up converter and worked great

What size engine was in the 1994? That could be the difference. If you are goig from a v6 to a v8 the bell houseing will not match and the trans will not be build for the 5.0 engine

So do you think the 94 tranny would work? I mean the 94 5.0l motor is the same as the 96 5.0l motor ain't it? So it should connect the same, I just need to get it back on the road! Moving back to Ohio in a month and I only have $640 to get the truck running

$640 and a month good luck on that bud. I really can not say for sure I am more of a gm guy

I would think it would but I would hate to give you the wrong advice and have you spend the money and find out it will not work. Like i said I am a gm guy but we have ran alot of demo derbys with fords and interchangeg alot of ford to ford parts that we were told would not work and they did

@Roy , do you think it would function properly? Cuz every parts list Iv looked at, it was that the 96 4r70w isn't interchangable with the previous years, which I believe that started making it for the 5.0 in 93/ 94?

Okay, well the place said they will give me a 30 day return , so I think I might just have to buy it, hook it up, drive it and see how she runs, if she doesn't then I can take it back I guess

Okay...I don't know for SURE SURE...all I can tell you if mechanically compatible...the electrics are secondary~ My 66 Chevy truck 235 was changed with an Impala 400...damned no power steering and the gas tank was too small for a long trip~...main crank was wobbly...and did not notice until I'd finished my trip to Wisconsin and back~

Eleventh generation...does not say how many permutations/engine tranny combinations were available...perhaps it does...we should read that info together to make sure that it will be a bolt-up situation...Eleventh Generation...must probably fit an eleventh generation...it isn't like we are taking an eighth gen and tryin' to horse it into compliance~

a shoelace and notepad will be all you need to check the main bolts dimension and the shaft length/flywheel dimension (if manual tranny)....and overall length to make sure the driveshaft will still work~

in the words of Johnny Cash "with a little bit of help from an A-dapter kit, we had that engine runnin' just like a song"~
