can I use the mph meter to know when to change gears?

Rule of thumb is at 3000 rpm, 1st: 0-15mph 2nd: 15-30mph 3rd: 30-45mph 4th:45-60 mph 5th: 60 and above Although I personally tweak the rule of thumb a little bit and use 1st just to get going, shifting into 2nd around 10, 3rd around 25, 4th around 40, and 5th about 55

Yes but a tachometer is better, that way you don’t over rev the engine between shifts.
